Found on the Side of the Road

by Aidan Zimmerman

"It hurts, I know

but there's nothing to do.

If we touch him, his mother

 might never return.

And besides, think of all the

 germs he might carry.

And how else will he learn

 to survive on his own?"

 I'll admit I said nothing,

though I found this very strange.

The boy seemed perfectly

healthy to me, and it

wasn't his fault he was stuck in that well.

 It wasn't very deep,

but he wasn't very tall.

I thought,

Well, he'll probably grow.
